General information

The term "eco travel" can be considered an umbrella term for many other terms, including green travel, responsible travel, sustainable tourism, and ecotourism (also known as ecological tourism).

Tips for Eco-Friendly Travel

Transportation

  • Use low-impact transportation such as walking, bicycling, and taking public transportation whenever possible.
  • Travel shorter distances.
  • Book a nonstop or more direct flight.
  • Carpool whenever possible.
  • Rent a hybrid or other fuel-efficient vehicle.
  • Purchase carbon offsets.

Hotel

  • Use refillable bottles for toiletries.
  • Stay at green hotels or eco-lodges.
  • In destinations where resources are strained, make an effort to use a bit less. That could take the form of going for a swim in the ocean during the hottest part of the day instead of cranking the air conditioner, or eating local produce instead of imported goods.

Other

  • Act locally and respect local customs. Also eat local and hire local guides.
  • Carry out what you carry in (leave no footprints).
  • Visit eco-friendly destinations.
