General Information

A carbon offset is a monetary contribution made to an environmental organization aiming to reduce greenhouse gases through efforts such as wind farms and reforestation, as well as promote renewable energy initiatives. In theory, the emissions you send into the atmosphere by driving or flying are "offset" by the carbon-reducing efforts of these organizations.

Where Can You Buy Carbon Offsets?

Several organizations, including nonprofits and independent companies, sell carbon offsets and allow you to calculate your carbon footprint based on how much you fly or drive (in addition to other activities). Once you determine your footprint, you'll be given a suggested dollar amount to contribute to a given fund.

Companies selling carbon offsets include The Conservation Fund (Go Zero), Native Energy, Sustainable Travel International, and TerraPass.

Many travel companies also allow you to buy carbon offsets when booking flights, including Nature Air, a Costa Rican airline that claims to be carbon neutral, Expedia (TerraPass), Travelocity (Go Zero), and Delta Air Lines (Go Zero). Virgin Atlantic (myclimate) sells carbon offsets onboard its aircraft.

Considerations

Not all companies selling carbon offsets are reputable. However, the nonprofit Clean Air-Cool Planet has a consumer guide that evaluates and rates carbon offset providers.

Prices for carbon offsets vary by company.
