Established in 1997 and based in Toronto's Lester B. Pearson International Airport, Air Canada offers flights around the globe. Air Canada recently switched to a more a-la-carte pricing format, with "extras" such as use of the call center, travel assistance services, and advance seat selection available at an additional fee instead of being part of the price of the ticket.

Taxes

Many times, advertised (or "published") airfares do not include government-imposed taxes. Put another way, the low price consumers first see is usually not what they will end up paying. See airline taxes for a current breakdown of domestic and international airfare taxes.

Fees

Many of the major U.S. airlines have instituted additional fees for booking tickets through their call centers, at airport reservations desks, or at city ticket offices. The fees range from $5 to $25 for most flights. Internet bookings on individual airline websites remain free of charge.

In addition, charges for optional services can sometimes raise the price you pay. These include $25 for a second checked bag, $100 for traveling with a pet, and $100 for an unaccompanied minor. See airline fees for an up-to-date list of fees for Air Canada.

Traveling with Pets

Air Canada does not allow pets to travel in the cabin at the passenger's feet unless the animal is a certified, professionally-trained service animal. However, pets are allowed to travel in the baggage compartment of the plane. Air Canada requires passengers to contact their Reservations department within 24 hours of booking travel in order to pre-register a pet for travel on the same flight. The price for one-way travel is $105 CAD/USD for flights within North America and $270 CAD/USD for international flights.

The folks at Bringo (www.nophonetrees) have created a service to help users skip phone trees and connect directly with a customer support rep. After a user enters their phone number (Bringo claims not to do anything with it other than use it to connect to the selected airline), Bringo will dial the company directly, navigate the phone tree, and literally call the user back when they're in the queue for an operator or customer service rep. The service is free!
